Tonight's Mega Millions Jackpot Increased to $333 Million- the Fourth Largest Ever in North America  
 
 

August 28, 2009-Due to larger than expected sales, the Mega Millions jackpot for tonight has been increased to $333 million, officially making it the second highest Mega Millions jackpot and the fourth highest jackpot of all time in North America. The largest Mega Millions jackpot to date was the March 6, 2007 drawing for $390 million. Two players split the jackpot - one from Georgia and one from New Jersey.

For tonight's $333 million drawing, the jackpot started at $12 million on July 10th, 2009 and has rolled 14 times to get to $333 million. Aid to education from New York ticket sales during the same time period has totaled close to $35 million.

Tickets for tonight's Mega Millions drawing will remain on sale until 10:45 p.m. The live, televised drawing will take place at 11 p.m. The states participating in Mega Millions are: California, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. Tickets cost $1 per game. To play Mega Millions, players choose five numbers from a field of 1 to 56 plus one mega ball number from a separate field of 1 to 46.

The New York Lottery contributed nearly $2.54 billion in fiscal year 2008-09 to help support education in New York State, over 12 percent of total state education funding to local school districts. The Lottery's ongoing commitment to education also includes the awarding of more than 1,100 Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Scholarships annually to high school students pursuing their higher education in New York State. Since the programs inception in 1999, the Lottery has awarded more than 10,300 scholarships. Sales of New York's Mega Millions tickets have generated more than $1.24 billion for aid to education since inception. The New York Lottery continues to be North America's largest and most profitable Lottery, earning over $36.7 billion in education support statewide since its founding over 40 years ago.
